Season Summary/Comments from Coach Shannon: I would like to congratulate all of the Wahoo MS basketball players on a very successful season. We showed a tremendous amount of improvement throughout the season and really were able to overcome a lot of weather related adversity with limited gym space to still be able to shine on the court, night in and night out. The C team finished with a 5-2 record, averaging 28 points/game offensively, while allowing 21 points/game defensively. The B team finished with a 7-1 record, averaging 45 points/game offensively, while allowing 23 points/game defensively. The B team was the champion in the Raymond Central tournament this season. The A team finished with a 7-0 record, averaging 60 points/game offensively, while allowing 27 points/game defensively. The A team were champions of the WCLUB tournament, as well. Thank you for all of your hard work, sweat, and hustle during the 2009 season. We would also like to say “Thank You” to all of the parents for their support during the season, as well.

Wahoo vs. A Team WCLUB Tournament (December 19, 2009)

2009 WCLUB MSBB Tournament Champions
Front Row:  Andrew Vech, Gavin Iversen, Ben Scheef, Zach Luben, Brandon Zetocka, Brent Tenopir, and Jake Scheef.
Back Row: Coach Shannon, Kirk Lindstrom, Drake Steinmetz, Josh Langmeier, Travis Burkey, Cole Petersen, Seth Lindgren, Collin Nadrchal, and Coach Carlson.

Game 1 vs. Bennington WIN 41-18
    (Langmeier-19, Lindgren-10, B. Scheef & Steinmetz-4, Zetocka & Lindstrom-2)
COMMENTS from Coach Shannon: In the Bennington game, we jumped out quickly to a 16-0 lead, due to our full court pressure that led to easy transition baskets, and that momentum propelled us throughout the game. We were able to play a lot of different players throughout the game and had a chance to rest our starters, which was great. We really played unselfishly and looked to get others involved throughout the game. Josh Langmeier led all scorers in the Bennington game with 19 points.

Game 2 vs. Arlington WIN 65-28
    (B. Scheef-31, Langmeier-16, Zetocka & Lindgren-4, Lindstrom-3, Iversen, J. Scheef & Tenopir-2, Steinmetz-1)
COMMENTS from Coach Shannon: In the championship game against Arlington, our full court pressure caused them troubles early and gave us a quick, jump-start offensively. We were able to get the ball down low to Ben Scheef and allow him to use his height and quickness to get to the basket. Once again, we were able to play a lot of players and use our depth to continue to wear on them throughout the game. Ben Scheef led all scorers in the Arlington game with 31 points.

Wahoo vs. Bishop Neumann (December 18, 2009)
    A Game WIN 45-34
    (Langmeier-14, B. Scheef-12, Lindgren-9, Zetocka-4, Lindstrom, J. Scheef & Steinmetz-2)
    B Game WIN 49-29
    (Steinmetz-10, Iversen & J. Scheef-9, Vech-8, Nadrchal-7, Hedges-4, Abbott-2)
    C Game LOSS 25-37
    (Lamprecht-7, Ford-5, Hedges-4, Burkey, Abbott, Rathke & Bell-2, Hartshorn-1)
COMMENTS from Coach Shannon: In the C game, we were able to step up our level of intensity on defense from the previous week, but struggled to make our easy baskets when we were able to get turnovers. Overall, it was a great season for the C team, as they made strides throughout the season. Dillon Lamprecht lead all C team scorers with 7 points. In the B game, we continued to improve on our full court pressure and really did a great job of hitting the defensive glass and getting out in transition. Drake Steinmetz lead all B team scorers with 10 points. In the A game, we did a great job of overcoming adversity with three of our leading scorers getting into foul trouble in the first quarter. Seth Lindgren really stepped up, both offensively and defensively, during the first half. Josh Langmeier lead all A team scorers with 14 points.

Wahoo vs. Yutan (December 14, 2009)
    C Game LOSS 18-27
    (Abbott-6, Burkey-5, Hartshorn-3, Dorer & Lamprecht-2)
    B Game WIN 49-19
    (J. Scheef-17, Iversen-11, Peterson-8, Vech-4, Hedges-3, Luben, Nadrchal & Tenopir-2)
COMMENTS from Coach Shannon: In the C game, the lack of practice time, due to weather, really affected our offensive and defensive continuity. We really struggled for three quarters on making the proper defensive shifts and hitting the offensive and defensive boards. We came alive in the fourth quarter but we ran out of time, due to our slow start. Alex Abbott lead all C team scorers with 6 points. In the B game, we were able to learn from our mistakes against Bennington and really focused on our defensive intensity and playing an attacking style of offense. We were able to jump on Yutan quickly and maintain that intensity throughout the game. Jake Scheef lead all B team scorers with 17 points.

Wahoo vs. Bennington (December 7, 2009)
    A Game WIN 69-16
    (Langmeier-33, B.Scheef-15, Zetocka-13, Lindstrom-4, Nadrchal & Lindgren-2)
    B Game LOSS 36-41
    (Steinmetz-15, J.Scheef-13, Peterson & Nadrchal-4)
    C Game WIN 21-19
    (Luben-6, Tenopir-5, Wobker & Hedges-4, Nelson-2)
    D Game WIN 19-7
    (Arent-8, Hartshorn-6, Bell-4, Burkey-2, Stauffer-1)

COMMENTS from Coach Shannon: In the A game, we played our best game of the season, so far. We were able to pressure Bennington full court and push the tempo to get easy baskets in transition. We were extremely unselfish and showed tremendous hustle throughout the game. Josh Langmeier lead all scorers with 33 points, setting a new MS scoring record. In the B game, we were not very sharp and appeared tired throughout the game. We struggled to get up and down the court, which lead to easy baskets for Bennington in transition, which cost us the game. Drake Steinmetz lead all B team scorers with 15 points. In the C game, we were able to hit enough free throws to pull out a close victory. Zach Luben lead all C team scorers with 6 points. In the D game, we were able to control the tempo defensively and push the ball in transition offensively. Skyler Arent lead all D team scorers with 8 points.

Wahoo vs. Raymond Central (December 2, 2009)
    A Game WIN 63-20
    (B. Scheef-18, Langmeier-15, Zetocka-14, Lindgren-6, Lindstrom, J. Scheef, Steinmetz, Peterson & Luben-2)
    B Game WIN 55-18
    (J. Scheef-18, Nadrchal-10, Vech-7, Steinmetz-6, Iversen-5, Peterson-3, Wobker, Abbott & Hedges-2)
C Game WIN 13-8 (2 Quarter Running Clock)
    (Hedges-7, Rademaker, Dorer & Stauffer-2)
COMMENTS from Coach Shannon: Our kids played extremely well throughout the entire evening. We were disappointed that Raymond Central chose not to play a full C team game, but our kids did a great job of making the most of the time that they were given and were very unselfish. In the C game, Tyler Hedges was the leading scorer with 7 points. In the B game, we were able to control the tempo of the game with our full court pressure. We need to continue to work on finishing after turnovers and making our free throws, but we played extremely hard and looked to make the extra pass to get our teammates open shots. In the B game, Jake Scheef led all scorers with 18 points and Collin Nadrchal finished with 10. In the A game, our full court pressure allowed us to create easy transition baskets and push the tempo of the game. I was very impressed by how much each level improved since our last game and how unselfish we were. In the A game, Ben Scheef led all scorers with 18 points, with Josh Langmeier adding 15 and Brandon Zetocka finishing with 14.

First Round vs. Palmyra WIN 53-23
    (Steinmetz-13, Iversen-11, J. Scheef-6, Peterson & Abbott-5, Nelson & Nadrchal-4, Stauffer & Lamprecht-2, Rathke-1)
COMMENTS from Coach Shannon: The Warriors jumped out to a 17-2 lead in the first quarter behind some great defensive pressure. In the first quarter 7 different players scored. We got Palmyra to play at a pace that they were not comfortable with and that led to some easy buckets off steals. The Warriors were led by Drake Steinmetz and Gavin Iversen with 13 and 11 points respectively

Championship Game vs. Neumann WIN 40-19
    (J. Scheef & Peterson-12, Steinmetz-11, Iversen-3, Lamprecht-2)
COMMENTS from Coach Shannon: Once again the Warriors jumped out to an early 16-8 lead after the first quarter. They held Bishop Neumann scoreless in the second period to jump to a 24-8 lead. We came out in the second quarter and really cranked up the intensity on defense. To hold a quality team like them to under 20 points is really impressive. It was good to see them come out and play like they did. Offensively the Warriors were led by Cole Peterson and Jake Scheef with 12 points a piece. Drake Steinmetz chipped in 11 points.

Wahoo vs. Bishop Neumann (November 19, 2009)
    A Game WIN 54-41 (12/13 FT)
    (B. Scheef-19, Langmeier-15, Lindgren-10, Zetocka & Lindstrom-4, Iversen-2)
    B Game WIN 30-22 (4/8 FT)
    (Steinmetz-12, Peterson-7, Nadrchal-4, Vech-3, Iversen-2, Team-2)
    C Game WIN 39-27 (2/8 FT)
    (Arent-8, Hartshorn, Hedges & Lamprecht-6, Nelson-4, Wobker-3, Bell, Stauffer & Ford-2)
COMMENTS from Coach Shannon: We came out sluggish at all levels tonight but were able to put together enough runs to win. We really have to work on getting more movement within our offensive sets and using our defensive pressure more effectively. The players have worked extremely hard in practice and we will continue to improve as the season progresses. In the C game, Skyler Arent led all scorers. In the B game, Drake Steinmetz was the top scorer. In the A game, Ben Scheef and Josh Langmeier lead all scorers.

Wahoo vs. Ashland (November 12, 2009)
A Game WIN 83-35 (Click HERE for more photos of this game)
    (B. Scheef-29, Langmeier-18, Zetocka-11, Lindstrom & Lindgren-5, J. Scheef & Nadrchal-4, Iversen-3, Luben & Steinmetz-2)
B Game WIN 33-11 (Click HERE for more photos of this game)
    (J. Scheef-11, Luben-5, Iversen, Steinmetz & Wobker-4, Nadrchal-3, Peterson-2)
    C Game WIN 47-8
    (Arent-12, Wobker-11, Hartshorn, Nelson, Abbott, Stauffer & Hedges-4, Burkey & Lamprecht-2)
COMMENTS from Coach Shannon: We were extremely pleased with the level of intensity and focus that we showed in the Ashland-Greenwood game. The C team set the tempo for the night by being extremely aggressive defensively. That led to transition baskets that got the offense jump-started. Skyler Arent and Kyle Wobker were the leading scorers for the C team. The B team also came out very aggressive and forced Ashland to play an up tempo ball game. Early on, we settled for jump shots that were not falling, but eventually started taking the ball to the basket and the shots started to fall again. Jake Scheef was the leading scorer for the B team. The A team exerted their will from the opening tip and played a smothering defense, getting off to an 15-0 run, then continued to push the ball in transition throughout the game. They did a great job of looking for one another offensively and being extremely unselfish with the basketball. Ben Scheef and Josh Langmeier lead the scoring for the A team.
